REGISTRATION OF VOTERS SET TO RESUME
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Provincial Election Supervisor Jessie Suarez yesterday said the registration of voters in the fifth district of Negros Occidental, that was temporarily suspended during the special election for congressman of the area, will resume on June 18 and end on October 31.

The registration of voters in other parts of Negros Occidental and the country has been ongoing and will also end on October 31, he added.

The filing of certificates of candidacy for the May 13, 2013 elections is set on October 1 to 5, 2012, he said.

Meanwhile, Suarez said the deadline for the submission of sworn statements of election contributions and expenditures by the winning and losing candidates in the recent special election in the fifth district is July 2.

Rep. Alejandro Mirsaol won over his nephew, Negros Occidental Board Member Emilio Yulo III with 81,982 votes or a lead of 13,103 votes.

Mirasol replaced Rep. Ignacio Arroyo Jr. who died in January.

Candidates who fail to submit their sworn statements will be penalized by the COMELEC law department, Suarez said, adding that non of the two have complied with the requirement yet.

The fifth district special election period ends on June 17, a Sunday, so the resumption of registration of voters will be on June 18, he said.

The ongoing registration of voters is from Monday to Saturday, including holidays, except Sundays, he added.

The end of the election period on June 17 also means the lifting of the ban in the fifth district of Negros Occidental on the transfer or detail of officers and employees in the Civil Service, including public school teachers; organizing or maintaining strike forces or similar forces; suspension of any elective official; and the carrying of firearms and other deadly weapons.*CPG
