Sagay holds ‘Adlaw sa Suba’

The city government of Sagay City in Negros Occidental held its “Adlaw sa Suba” recently, with 3,000 volunteers participating in the tree planting and other activities to green the riverbanks and raise awareness to protect the Himoga-an River, a press release from the city said.

Activities included the “Palumba sa Suba”, the Himoga-an carabao race relay challenge, three paddle boat challenges, running, swimming, fishing, tug-of-war, paddle boat race double men, and paddle boat race male and female double mix.

Winners in the race relay were the red team of Barangay Fabrica, first place, and received P10,000; second place, blue team of Sitio Leonor, P7,500; and third place, green team of Barangay Himoga-an Baybay, P5,000.

The Lin-ay sang Suba was the candidate of the orange team of Brgy. Paraiso, while the best boat painting design went to the red team, the press release added.

Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva also led city, barangay officials and heads of government agencies in releasing 2,000 tilapia fingerlings into the river. He said there is need to endlessly work to green riverbanks and mountains, protect reefs and preserve the environment, the press release also said.

A memorandum of agreement was also signed between the schools and the barangays to institutionalize the “Adlaw sa Suba”, which won first place in the 2011 Best Tourism Practices sports event-city category given by the Association of Tourism Officers of the Philippines and the Department of Tourism, the press release added.*

IN EB MAGALONA
120 students receive
educational assistance

EB Magalona, Negros Occidental, yesterday marked the 114th Philippine Independence Day with the distribution of P180,000 in educational assistance to 120 honor students in 28 elementary and high schools in the town.

Mayor David Albert Lacson, who was assisted by Vice Mayor Rex Depasucat, members of the Sangguniang Bayan and officials of the Department of Education in the distribution of financial assistance to both elementary and high school students, said this will encourage them to strive more and excel in their studies.

The honor students from the elementary received P1,000, while those in high school honor got P2,000 each.

The educational assistance to honor students was started by Lacson, after his election as the town mayor in 2007.

The activity, which was also attended by Fr. Danilo Cenal, teachers and principals of various public and private schools in EB Magalona, municipal employees and the town police headed by Senior Insp. Arnold Mesias, was preceded by a flag-raising ceremony, in front of the municipal hall.*GPB

Student leadership
training at UNO-R

About 118 students of UNO-Recoletos in Bacolod City completed the annual leadership training-workshop conducted by the Office of the Student Affairs, a press release from the school said.

The activity held June 4 to 6 involved discussions about the self, the community and leadership, with Rev. Fr. Cornelio Moral speaking on the school’s vision-mission; Mely Flores on community extension programs; Junnel Lupo, leadership; and Carlos Legaspi Jr. on self-assessment, the press release also said.

The participants represented the Supreme Student Council, College Councils, and the Campus Organizations Federation. A similar workshop is set June 16 and 17, the press release added*

USLS to form
Human Lasallian Star

A human star formation will highlight the closing rites of the centennial celebration of the Lasallian presence in the Philippines, 4:30 p.m. on June 15 at the University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City, a press release from the school said.

The formation, to be held at the USLS football field, is expected to gather 2,000 participants composed of the administrators, students, faculty, staff and alumni. Other La Salle schools in the country will also organize their own version of the human Lasallian star, the press release also said.

It was in 1911 when the La Salle Brothers arrived in Manila to establish the first Lasallian school. The USLS, founded in 1952, will celebrate its 60th year in July 2012 on the theme “Transforming Lives. Building Communities. Shaping Futures”, the press release said.

Br. Alvaro Rodriguez Echeverria, superior general of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, will visit the USLS and St. Joseph School–La Salle on June 17 to 18, during the celebration, the press release added.*
