Yesterday, Bacolod City honored three of its outstanding citizens with the prestigious Banwahanon Award at rites held at the New Government Center. This event that was started in 1978 has become a tradition since then with about 140 of its residents having been bestowed the distinction of being distinguished contributors to the development and progress of the city.

Present at the activity were several former awardees who were properly recognized during the program. It was indeed, heartening to see that all of them are still active in their various activities and pursuits as participants in the plans of the city intended for the benefit of its residents.

The Banwahanon Awardees of Bacolod City are a motley group, with interests as varied as are the concerns of their city. They are businessmen, members of the academe, executives, media personalities, artists, civic leaders, outstanding parents, members of the clergy, and so many others. And maybe it is not just a coincidence that their families, too, are striving to themselves be worthwhile members of the community.

In the Banwahanon awardees, other city residents have a source of inspiration and belief that their city knows how to recognize their good works and honor them.

Among the matters brewed about among some of the awardees last night was the possibilility of their group coming together to form a foundation that will work to help improve the lives of their fellow residents. If that materializes, it will, indeed, be a big boost, not only for the city, but especially for the development of its youth, with them, the awardees, as the models of public service and concern for their people.*
