Yap awaits OK of funds
for new Danao school

A one-hectare will be the new site of the Danao Elementary School in Barangay Danao, Bindoy town, Negros Oriental, after its old building was damaged by the earthquake.

Bindoy Mayor Valente Yap said they prepared the land using the heavy equipment of the town, and are waiting for Rep. Jocelyn Limkaichong (Neg. Or., 1st District) to make good her pledge of P90,000, and for funds from the Department of Education, to construct the school building.

Yap said the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology has declared the old school as no longer safe because of huge cracks in the building and in the soil, that can trigger landslide, especially during the rainy months.

“We are not taking any risks, especially to the school children”, he said, adding that the new school site is a few kilometers away from the fault line that Phivolcs had discovered.

Yap said he hopes the new school building will soon be constructed, as the students are using makeshift classrooms now.*
