How do I get our
guests to go home?1

Dear Tita,

My husband Ben and I moved into our new home a few months ago. We are very proud of our home and enjoy inviting friends over for dinner. My problem with this is Ben’s officemates, who love to come over for our dinner parties, but stay until very late at night. They enjoy singing with the karaoke or chatting until the wee hours, drinking beer and eating pica-pica.

I tried telling Ben to send them home but he is too polite to do so. He said they might be offended if he drives them away while they are having so much fun. This is getting on my nerves as I have to report for work early the next morning. I have been late a couple of times and my attention was called by my supervisor.

One time, I hid the case of beer and announced that we ran out, but they quickly went to buy from the nearby sari-sari store and drank it ‘til past 1 a.m. I have been nagging Ben about this but he just brushes me off, saying I shouldn’t be a spoilsport.

My mother-in-law, who is used to holding parties at her home until way past midnight, advised me to just allow Ben and his guests to enjoy at our home. She said it is better than having him stay out late with his friends.

Sometimes, I regret why we even started inviting people to dinner at our home. I don’t find it enjoyable any longer. Any tips on how to solve this problem?

DESPERATE WIFE

Dear Desperate Wife,

I had a relative once with the same problem. His visitors would stay until the wee hours chatting and drinking. They didn’t seem to notice him yawning and scratching his tummy.

Finally, when he got fed up, he took out his ‘banig’ (sleeping mat) and pillows and spread them on the floor in the middle of the sala. His shocked guests quickly bade him good night and left. While this might seem extreme, you could get some results if you come up with other innovative ideas on how to get rid of overstaying guests. You could suddenly announced, “Well, it’s been great having you all but I have to go to work early tomorrow, so good night everybody”! That should clear out your place in an instant. You have to be this blunt as some people are too thick to take a hint.

TITA
