Storm victims to get
P25-M housing aid

More than 3,000 families in Negros Oriental, affected by tropical storm “Sendong” will receive about P25 million in housing assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development today, a government press release said.

The Emergency Shelter Assistance will be given in simultaneous payout rites at the Provincial Convention Center in Dumaguete City, and at the Tanjay City Hall.

All family-beneficiaries, whose houses were damaged by “Sendong” will receive P5,000 each to repair their homes, Jaybee Binghay of DSWD 7 said. Those with destroyed residences, but are not willing to be relocated, will each receive P10,000, she added.

During the cash aid payout, another 134 affected families will also get their Core Shelter Assistance Project, with P70,000 each for those constructing their houses in relocation sites in Siaton and Bacong towns. Those who will be rebuild their homes in their own lot or property in a cluster of five families will get P50,000, Binghay said.

DSWD 7 regional director Ma. Evelyn Macapobre said that ESA is allotted P15.94 million, while the construction of 134 core shelter units has a P9.38 million budget.

Families benefiting from the ESA and CSAP come from Siaton, Sibulan, Bacong, Valencia, San Jose, Amlan, Pamplona, Mabinay, and the cities of Dumaguete and Tanjay, with a total of 3,017 beneficiaries, she added in the press release.

Macapobre also said that local government units concerned must be able to comply with all their counterpart requirements, especially the availability of lots where the core shelter houses will be constructed.

The project aims, not only to provide new and safer relocation site for the beneficiaries, but needs the participation of the affected residents in the construction of their houses the ‘bayanihan’ way, the press release added.*
