UniCity tagged as fire hazard
BY ADRIAN NEMES III

“This building is a fire hazard”

The signage was posted by the Bacolod City Bureau of Fire Protection team on the glass wall of the UniCity General Merchandise at Araneta Street, Bacolod City, yesterday.

City fire marshal Chief Insp. Pamela Rojane Candido said they inspected the building occupied by UniCity on May 22 and noticed that there is a fire exit but the pathway is blocked by a concrete wall.

Candido said they issued notice to the management so it could correct the violation in 15 days, but when they inspected the establishment again yesterday, it had not been fully corrected yet, prompting the posting of fire hazard sign.

She said the management of UniCity has to submit an affidavit of undertaking showing the date when they can fully correct the violation noted, and their renovation plan.

Candido also said, the management has to pay P37,500 in fines to the Provincial Bureau of Fire Protection as the Bacolod BFP can only accept fines P30,000 and below.

Later, the Bacolod BFP will inspect the UniCity once more and if they still fail to correct the violation, a closure order will be issued.

UniCity is the second establishment posted with the “Fire Hazard” sign after the Philippine National Bank building, BFP records show.

Candido said the management of BFP has filed an alternative remedial measure so they could fully correct the violations noted by inspectors last year.*APN
