LTO-Bais to enforce law
on early warning device
BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

The Land Transportation District Office in Bais City, Negros Oriental, will soon require drivers of public and private four-wheeled vehicles to carry the prescribed standard early warning devices.

LTO District chief Alberta Janine Lawas said this is in line with a nationwide directive to ensure the safety of road users, especially when vehicles that encounter trouble are forced to park along the road.

While a timeline has not yet been set by the LTO central office on the EWD Law, Lawas appealed to owners of four-wheeled vehicles to begin acquiring the prescribed yellow and red triangles that are to be used as early warning devices.

She said many vehicles do not regularly carry the devices so it is a common sight where owners or drivers of four-wheeled distressed vehicles park along the road and make do with makeshift EWDs, like tree branches.

The triangular device will have to meet LTO standards and should pass inspection, with a sticker attached to its back as proof of approval, Lawas said.

She said she is awaiting word from the LTO regional office in Cebu for the list of accredited shops and stores selling the standard early warning device.

The accessory is not a requirement for motor vehicle registration, but should be presented during checkpoints. Those who fail will be fined, Lawas said.*JFP
