Two more soldiers of the Army’s 3rd Infantry Division stationed in Negros and Panay again displayed the Filipino culture of honesty, by returning wallets containing cash and a Sony camera they had found in Iloilo and Negros Oriental.
Sgt. Francisco Palencia, a member of the 79th Infantry Battalion, found a wallet and a Sony camera at the lobby of the Bethel Hotel Saturday in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental.
Major Enrico Gil Ileto, 3ID spokesman, said Palencia turned over the wallet containing P6,370 in cash and a camera to the hotel management, which were later claimed by its owner, identified as Caryl Groover Grin, an American national and a guest of the hotel.
A week ago, Ileto said another trooper of the Philippine Army, Sgt. Wenceslao Pablito Jr., returned a wallet, containing P4, 500 in cash and a check, he found at the Iloilo Airport.
The owner was later identified as Anthony Cortel, an employee of Hotel Del Rio in Iloilo City.
Ileto said the act of Palencia and Pablito was apparently inspired by the honestly of three Army soldiers stationed in Negros island.
He said Cortel lauded the honesty of Pablito, who is presently assigned at the 301st Infantry Brigade in Dingle, Iloilo.
Major General Jose Mabanta Jr., 3ID commanding general, commended Palencia and Pablito for bringing honor not only to the Army but to the Filipno people as well.
“Good news will spread again among foreigners about the Filipino culture honesty and concern for others,” Mabanta said.
In previous months, Army Privates Danny Faigane and Marlon Vera, as well as Cpl. Fernando Samperoy, members of the 32nd Division Reconnaissance Company and the 47th Infantry Battalion, respectively, were recognized for their honesty by Army chief Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Bautista. For returning P90,000 and P50,000 in cash they had found in La Libertad, Negros Oriental, and in Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.
“These stories about our soldiers’ honesty continue to inspire the entire Army and shows how we value honesty in the organization,” Mabanta said.
He said it is part of the Army’s transformation effort to develop the character of soldiers and to internalize the core values of honor, patriotism and duty.*GPB back
