SCOUT GRADUATES URGED:
Intensify campaign
vs. gambling, drugs

Graduates of the Special Counter-Insurgency Operations Unit of the Philippine National Police were challenged by Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo to intensify the campaign against illegal drugs, gambling and other criminalities in the province, a government press release said.

Degamo assured the SCOUT graduates of the support of the provincial government and said the policemen are it’s partners in ensuring peace and order in Negros.

He said policemen have the unrelenting support of the province in stamping out illegal activities, particularly gambling and drugs, the press release said.

Gov’t to unveil food
sufficiency program

The Department of Agriculture announced yesterday the implementation of the "Food Staples Sufficiency Program" that will be launched on July 5 during the second Agricultural Machinery Exposition at the World Trade Center in Pasay City.

The FSSP interventions include production-support, enhancing incentives and enabling mechanism, and managing food consumption.

Agriculture Secretary Proceso Alcala said production support includes irrigation, quality seeds, postharvest facilities and other components; while economic incentives and enabling mechanisms will focus on market reforms in palay procurement, rice distribution provision of affordable credit, and the expansion of crop insurance coverage.

Fire cases down 12.10%: DILG

The Department of Interior and Local Government reported yesterday that fire incidents nationwide went down 12.10 percent or 3,058 cases, from January to April this year, compared to the 3,479 fires for the same period last year, its press release said.

But DILG Secretary Jesse Robredo said that, based on reports from the Bureau of Fire Protection, estimated cost of damages rose by 18.24 percent or P1.09 billion from P922.2 million, the press release also said.

He said majority of the fire incidents were accidental in nature, mainly due to faulty electrical connections and defective appliances, spontaneous combustion, open flame due to unattended cooking stoves or lighted cigarettes.
