President declares July 4
non-working day in Cadiz

President Benigno Aquino III has declared July 4, which falls on a Wednesday, as a special (non-working) day in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental, in celebration of its 45th Charter Day, a Malacañang press release said yesterday.

The Chief Executive issued the declaration through Proclamation No. 411, signed by Executive Secretary Paquito Ochoa Jr. on June 18, 2012, to give the people of Cadiz the full opportunity to celebrate and participate in the occasion with appropriate ceremonies, the press release said.

On July 4, 1967, Cadiz was inaugurated as a city by virtue of Republic Act No. 4894.

Cadiz City is a gateway and premier center of agro-fishery resources of Negros Island.*

Mahogany seedlings planted
at Bacolod sanitary landfill

Students of the Bacolod City College planted 1,000 mahogany seedlings at the perimeter of the sanitary landfill area in Brgy. Felisa, during the Arbor Day celebration Sunday.

The seedlings were planted a meter apart, and will serve as buffers against the smell and flood, City Disaster Management head Jomari Vargas said. The sanitary landfill has a black liner to filter the water and silt from the wastes that are deposited, and the water in the cleansing chamber will irrigate the seedlings, a press release from the city said.

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia, who led city officials and students in a caravan to the planting site, said BCC is now felt in another scope in the community.

“BCC is known for being the only public college for the poor but deserving students in the city. Now, its students are also active in civic actions aside from their academic training, which means more comprehensive education for them,” he added.

Also participating in the activity were Vice Mayor Thaddy Sayson, Vargas, Secretary to the Mayor Moises de la Cruz, BCC Administrator Dr. Johanna Bayoneta, Environment and Natural Resources head Max Sillo, executive assistant Roger Giganan, Elma Advincula, DPS head Nelson Sedillo, and barangay officials of Felisa, led by Councilor Mona Dia Jardin, the press release added.*
