An old flame came back

Dear Tita,

After being married to my wife, Annie, for six years, I was in a downward slump due to problems at work, and Annie was giving more attention to our two small sons than she did me. It was at this stage that I met Dina, a 19-year-old college student, who was doing her on-the-job training at our office. Dina was vivacious and full of life. She was assigned to my department and would often come with me in my field trips. She was very attentive to me and it felt good to have a young lady hang on to my every word.

It wasn’t long before we fell in love. I found Dina very passionate and loving. I kept thinking of her at all hours. One day, Annie came to our office looking very angry. She wanted to know who this Dina was. Fortunately, Dina was absent that day. When I got home, Annie confronted me about Dina. I denied everything and told her it was just office gossip that has no basis whatsoever. Fortunately, I managed to convince her that there was nothing to the rumor and she began showering me with attention and care.

I decided to break off with Dina, who cried and said that she loved me very much. I told her I loved her, too, but I couldn’t risk losing my family. Dina left that week for Manila and I thought that was the last I would see her.

Years passed. Now my sons are grown-up and are both working. Annie and I have become very close and are looking forward to seeing our sons settle down. Recently, I got the shock of my life when I received a phone call from Dina. She told me she had married a guy in Manila but their marriage lasted only a few years and she decided to come home. She wanted to see me and invited me for a snack. I told her I was very busy and that it would be best to leave things as they were. She said she only wanted to see me again as she never got over me all these time.

She has been calling often, asking to see me “for old time’s sake”. How can I convince her to give up on me? I am very happily married and I don’t want to spoil my life with Annie.

CONTENTED HUSBAND

Dear Contented Husband,

This is a very dicey situation. You should not entertain her calls or her invitation to see you “for old time’s sake”. Hopefully, she will give up when she sees that you are no longer interested. Let’s just hope Dina has some self-esteem left and won’t think of bothering someone who doesn’t care for her anymore. However, there are some women who can’t seem to take no for an answer. Remember the movie, “Fatal Attraction”? The one thing you must do is to totally avoid her.

TITA
