PNP clears Guisihan
of mining link

BY GILBERT BAYORAN

The Police Regional Office 6 yesterday debunked allegations that Senior Supt. Allan Guisihan is a protector of illegal mining activity at Calagna-an Island in Carles, Iloilo.

Chief Supt. Cipriano Querol, regional police director of Western Visayas, said “Validation reports did not confirm the involvement of Guisihan, provincial police director of Negros Occidental, or any policemen in the illegal mining activity”.

A security guard and a civilian were killed in a shooting incident on June 24 at the Calagna-an, and the two suspects, identified as Jojie Belmonte of Negros Occidental and Cocoy Jopson of Davao City, were recommended by Guisihan to work in a mining establishment in the place.

Belmonte and Jopson reportedly fled on board a motorized pump boat, believed bound for Manapla, Negros Occidental.

Guisihan said he has alerted police units in the coastal areas of northern Negros, to immediately arrest Belmonte and Jopson, if sighted.

He said he was surprised that Belmonte and Jopson had firearms, as he recommended them to work at a mining site owned by his friend, Eric Lacson, and not as security guards.

Belmonte and Jopson reportedly used an M-16 assault rifle and an Uzi machine pistol in shooting the two victims.

In a statement issued by the PRO6, Querol, said that the shooting incident in Carles town of Iloilo, was caused by misunderstanding, and had nothing to do with illegal mining issues.

Guisihan said he will not tolerate what Belmonte and Jopson did in Carles, when they shot security guard George Torres and Dante Villanueva.

Querol said he has sent a platoon of 6th Regional Public Safety Battalion troopers for peacekeeping operations at the Calagnaan island, in coordination with the Carles Police Station.

“We cannot dismiss the security threat in the area. Anything may happen and we cannot afford to be complacent,” he added. *GPB
