We have no reason
to fight – Alvarez

BY CARLA GOMEZ

Negros Occidental Vice Governor Genaro Alvarez Jr. yesterday stressed that there is no rift in the United Negros Alliance, and that he and Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. remain friends.

Alvarez issued the clarification amid talk that he may run for Marañon’s post in 2013.

Negros Occidental Governor Alfredo Marañon Jr. Monday also called reports of a rift in UNA as mere speculation and rumor-mongering.

There have been speculations that Alvarez could run for governor in 2013 with former San Carlos Mayor Eugenio Lacson as his running mate, with the backing of some congressman who are allegedly unhappy with Marañon.

But Alvarez yesterday stressed that he and the governor are friends and have no intention to fight each other.

“We have no reason to fight, I am not a warrior, I am just a peace-loving person,” Alvarez said.

In fact he and the governor were at a Negros Occidental Comprehensive Health Program gathering in the fifth district on Friday, in Kabankalan City on Saturday for an environment week affair, and in Valladolid on Monday for the demonstration of a combine rice harvester, Alvarez said.

Alvarez said he will abide by the UNA selection process of its candidates for the May 2013 polls.

The procedure in the last six elections was that Ambassador Eduardo Cojuangco, founder of UNA and the Nationalist People’s Coalition, invites the governor and congressmen of Negros Occidental to a meeting and asks them which posts they want to run for, Alvarez said.

“Each one states what he plans on running for and then we return to Negros to announce our line up,” Alvarez said.

“I think that is the same process that will take place,” he said.

Marañon is chairman of UNA and the NPC in Negros, while Alvarez is vice chairman.

Alvarez said if Marañon does not run for governor, he will run for the post no matter who his opponent will be.*CPG
