Some members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Negros Oriental are challenging the Philippine National Police to extend more efforts against hoax incidents victimizing local officials.
In his privilege speech, during the SP session Tuesday, Board Member Angelo Teves said that he is alarmed by the series of incidents involving scammers using his name in making reservations at a restaurant and a hotel, allegedly for VIP guests.
Teves said a hotel employee called his office for confirmation of the reservation booking and a purported request from him for policemen to check the security of the hotel. He added that he immediately alerted the PNP about the incident.
Another hotel in Dumaguete also served lunch to two policemen who were allegedly requested by Teves’s office to check the perimeter of the facility. The management opted not to ask the policemen or Teves to pay for the meal even when it learned that the request was a hoax.
He said he has informed all restaurants, hotels and resorts in Negros Oriental not be entertain any phone transactions using his name. Teves said he does not know who is putting him in a bad light.
BMs Saleto Erames, Edmund Dy and Melimoore Saycon, meanwhile, said they were similarly victimized by hoax transactions. Dy said the police must investigate this matter as more business establishments could be victimized.
BM Rodrigo Alanano said the PNP and the business community should also be more careful and always double-check transactions, especially those made over the phone. He suggested that representatives from the hotels, resorts and restaurants, and the PNP be invited to the next SP session so strategies against the scam can be adopted.*MA
