PNP: 1 killed, 2 injured in
motorcycle accident

A motorcycle passenger was killed and two were injured in a road accident in Isabela town, Negros Occidental, at about 11:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Senior Insp. Jayson Mangulimutan, Isabela town police chief, identified the fatality as Marvin Ogatis, 38, of Sitio Talasa in Brgy. Guinpana-an, Moises Padilla town, Negros Occidental. He was declared dead on arrival at the Don Ignacio L. Arroyo Sr. Memorial District Hospital in Isabela.

Ogatis’ neighbors, Lauron Demillo, 18, and Amay Sa-onoy, 24, who was driving the motorcycle, were also rushed to the IADH but later transferred to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod, where they were confined for injuries sustained, the police said.

Investigation showed that the three were on their way home from a birthday party in Himamaylan City, when the accident occurred, Mangulimutan said.

He added that Sa-onoy may have miscalculated a turn, causing the motorcycle to crash into the railings beside the road. The impact threw Sa-onoy, Demillo and Ogatis to the pavement.

Mangulimutan said that before the accident, the ill-fated motorcycle had passed by their police station and the policemen there observed that it was speeding.*APN

Three arrested for ‘jai alai’

Three men allegedly involved in illegal jai alai operations were arrested by the police in Brgy. Mandalagan, and at Lopez Jaena Street, Bacolod City, Monday and Tuesday.

Station 7 policemen, led by Chief Insp. Levy Pangue, arrested Gerlie Tejada, 42, of Purok Kabugwason in Brgy. Mansilingan, at about 9:30 p.m. Monday, while she was allegedly in the act of soliciting bets for jai alai.

Policemen seized several tipsters with the codenames “Bullseye”, “Target” and “Guitar”, a bundle of betting stubs, a ballpen and P15 in cash from Tejada when she was arrested, Pangue said.

Rudy Ambahan, 42, of Libertad-Amelia Streets, Bacolod, was also apprehended by Station 6 policemen while he was soliciting bets for jai alai at Lopez Jaena Street, at about 10 p.m., Tuesday, Station 6 commander, Chief Insp. Noel Polines, said.

A tipster with the codename “Bullseye”, several tally sheets, P58 in cash, and betting stubs were recovered from Ambahan during his arrest, the police said.

Joel Lumanang, 45, of Purok Mainuswagon in Brgy. 30, was caught soliciting bets for jai alai, also at Lopez Jaena Street, at around 10:30 p.m., by Station 6 policemen, who confiscated a tipster with the codename “Bullseye”, jai alai paraphernalia, and P64 in cash from him.

Station 3 chief, Senior Insp. Conrado Rances, also reported the arrest of Warlito Detoyato, 68, at his residence in Purok Yanson II, Brgy. Mandalagan, Bacolod.

Detoyato was apprehended for illegal gambling, on the strength of an arrest warrant issued by Regional Trial Court Demosthenes Magallanes.*APN

BI probing missing journalist

The Bureau of Immigration is investigating the entry into the Philippines of Jordanian journalist Baker Atyani.

Atyani and his two Filipino crew are declared missing in Sulu province.

The BI is an attached agency of the Department of Justice.

BI spokesperson Maria Antonette Mangrobang said yesterday that the agency asked the Foreign Correspondents Association of the Philippines to confirm if Atyani, South Asian Bureau Chief of the Dubai-based Al-Arabiya Network, is their member.

FOCAP is a non-profit organization of international news agencies, publications, radio and television networks.

"We were requesting for verification/certification if Mr. Atyani is registered/accredited with FOCAP," Mangrobang said.

The government has expressed doubts on the true nature of Atyani's trip to the Philippines.

Atyani was able to interview Al-Qaeda leader Osama Bin Laden a few months before the Sept. 11, 2011 terrorist attacks in the United States.

Mangrobang said that their investigation was a "standard operating procedure."

"We have to check if foreigners have appropriate documentation for the activities they are performing in the country," she said.*PNA
