Typhoon victims get P2.1M
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The provincial government distributed yesterday more than P2.115 million worth of financial assistance to 711 victims of tropical storm “Sendong” in Tanjay City, one of the worst hit areas in the 2nd district of Negros Oriental.

The distribution was led by Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo, assisted by Tanjay Mayor Lawrence Teves, Provincial Social Welfare and Development officer Alice Lagarde, and the 14 heads of barangays where the recipients came from.

A total of 136 families, whose houses were destroyed, received P5,000 each, while the 574 families with damaged homes got P2,500 each.

Lagarde said the allotment for 11 local government units, including Tanjay City, is based on the list submitted to her office by social welfare officers in affected areas after a thorough validation, and signed by the respective local chief executives.

She issued the clarification following complaints by some residents of barangays Novallas and San Isidro in Tanjay, that they, too, were typhoon victims and have been waiting for financial assistance for seven months now.

The Tanjay government also earlier distributed financial aid to Sendong victims in its 19 barangays, with P10,000 for those whose houses were destroyed, and P5,000 each for damaged properties.

Teves said the money came from donations and from the quick response fund of the city.*JG
