NOHS turns 110

The Negros Occidental High School, that was declared by the National Historical Institute as the oldest school in the province, will celebrate its 110th foundation anniversary on the theme “Continuing the 110 Years Legacy of Culture of Excellence”, from July 1 to 6, its press release said.

The activity will kick off tomorrow with a fun run dubbed “Dalagan para sa Pinakadaan nga Eskwelahan (Run for the Oldest School)”, followed by a program to formally declare the opening of the barrio-fiesta themed celebration, typified by food kiosks, bingo games, and carnival rides, the press release also said.

Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., Schools Division Supt. Rizalino Tortosa of the Department of Education Negros; ASDS’ Freddie Mocon and Anthony Liobet; Romeo Sison of ES-MAPEH, NOHS Alumni Association president Edwin Galon, NOHS-GPTA officers led by Madeline Diaz, and Barangay 39 Captain Dante Danoy are expected to attend the opening rite.

Other activities in line with the celebration include a “history walk”, that will showcase glimpses of the school through its century-and-a-decade of existence; a mural painting contest to be sponsored by the Rotary Club Metro Bacolod through president Rachel Moraca and vice-president for admin Jess Calixto; the “Hataw sa NOHS”, or a playground demonstration by the 5,000 plus-strong student population; and a program that will show the talents in dancing, singing and theater of the NOHS students, teachers and school officials, the press release added.*

City respects Palace decision
on special holiday, mayor says

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia yesterday said they respect the decision of Malacañang not to grant the request to declare June 18, as a special non-working holiday in Bacolod City.

The Sangguniang Panlungsod of Bacolod had earlier requested the President to declare June 18, 2012, as a special non-working holiday for Bacolod City, as the day commemorating the date of signing into law of the Charter of Bacolod City.

Leonardia said “I would like to state for the record that we are reiterating that we are respecting the decision of Malacañang.”

Abigail Valte, Undersecretary-Office of the President, in her letter dated June 25, said “The request made no mention of any controversial issue relative to the celebration of the Charter Day. The request was processed in good faith.”

Her letter was in response to the letter of broadcaster Franklin Villanueva dated June 22 asking the Office of the President to clarify its stand on the issue.

Leonardia said he believes that the issue can be tackled in a more appropriate fora.

“Maybe, in the right time we can revisit that. As of now, I would like to reiterate that we accept whatever is the decision of Malacanang,” he said.*CGS

Intelligence officers of city and provincial police offices in Western Visayas are now covered by a six-strike policy on unsolved robbery and theft incidents in their areas.

Western Visayas police director Chief Supt. Cipriano Querol said he had crafted a policy to relieve intelligence officers of the Provincial or City Police Offices in the region, in case there are six unsolved robbery and theft incidents in their areas of responsibility, regardless of the amount or value taken and modus operandi.

This was after Querol also issued a directive ordering all unit commanders to utilize efficiently their squad staff, which is composed of operations, intelligence, investigation and community relations, and to make them liable or accountable for any crime incident that might occur in their respective areas, due to incompetence and negligence of duty.

Querol also ordered the establishment of Barangay Information Nets in every barangay, to help the PNP gather information and monitor activities of the criminals.

The trilateral partnership between the local executive, the police as well as the community is of paramount importance in the maintenance of peace and order in every locality, he said. *GPB
