Policemen in Region 7 will plant 576,000 trees as part of the chief Philippine National Police’s “Sampung Milyung Puno Pamana sa Kinabukasan” project, in connection with the government’s national greening program.
PNP regional director, Chief Supt, Marcelo Garbo, who spearheaded a tree-planting activity of police personnel from the Negros Oriental Provincial Police Office underscored thisrecently at the Water Septage Facility in Barangay Camanjac, Dumaguete City.
A total of 150,000 seedlings were planted.
Garbo admitted that this is a very challenging task for the police with 145,000 members nationwide and 8,000 regionwide participating.
Under the program, each of the more than 1,205 police and non-uniformed personnel of the NOPPO is required to plant 72 trees in one year, or six trees per month.
To date, the provincial command has accomplished 73 percent for the month of February, which means that they have planted 5,286 assorted trees including fruit-bearing trees from the target of 7,230 trees per month, provincial director Sr. Supt. Edward Carranza, said.
Due toshortage of seedlings, Carranza instructed the Police Community Relations to prepare a budget in the construction of its nursery with a capacity of 2,000 seedlings for the provincial police office alone.
Carranza said he also directed and encouraged police stations in the province to provide a space for their own seedlings nursery to be able to meet the required number of trees to be planted this year.
Of the 10 million trees programmed for the Philippine National Police, 86,760 are assigned to be planted by the police in Negros Oriental.
PO3 Edilberto Euraoba III of the PCR section said, it is using a scorecard in monitoring the planted trees to make sure they are growing, and in case of mortality, the concerned police man is required to replant for the success of the program.
Police stations who submitted reports that included the planting of banana trees are advised to delete the same from their records.*JG
