championship game set

The one game championship of the Tan Kek Pin Memorial Basketball Cup is set at the Po Hang Gym of the Bacolod Tay Tung High School 7 p.m. on May 3.

In the semifinals encounter top seed JSY Transport defeated a pesky University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos Polvora’s Law Office, 74-63, and No. 3 Talisay City survived a quarterfinals scare and outlasted University of St. La Salle Nhojs in the semifinals 104-99.

The balance offensive output of JSY gave them a 40-35 advantage at the break as 11 players scored led by Ely Olarte and Chad Paez with 6 points a piece. Tata Javillo delivered 14 baskets for Polvora.

JSY opened the third canto with a 10-0 run and blanked UNO-R for more than five minutes for a 50-35, lead delivered in the lowpost by Arnol Laureño and Michael Macon.

Joemel Paderog and Tata Javillo led the Polvora and cut the lead to 55-48 by the end of the third quarter.

Colin Testa’s trey brought it to 62-57 with 5:46 remaining, but JSY countered with an 8-0 run anchored on back to back treys by Ely Olarte with 3 minutes left in the game to establish another double digit lead to stymied another Polvora comeback.

Talisay City played for three straight days survived Fil-Sino Thunderbirds in the quarterfinals losing in the first game, 103-101, but came back with an impressive 93-71 victory in the rubber match to advance to the semis.

Talisay City avenged their elimination loss to USLS and was led by Sonny Abaring 27 points, Mamerto Santillan 21 points, Joemel Garrido 18 points, Atoy Salazar 17 points and Jornel Laborte 12 points.

Talisay remained on top at the end of the third quarter 81-71 as Villafranca had 10 points in the quarter.

Emman Sevilla scored 7 straight points for USLS but Santillan answered to extend the lead anew at 91-78. NHOJs Arturo Cuaresma layup with 4:20 left cut the deficit to 84-92.

Villafranca paced USLS with 23 points., Arturo Cuaresma added 18, Sevilla shot 12 points, Marloni Gonzales and Rendell John Bernales hit 11 each.*
