The Angelos concert

IVY
They came, they sang and they conquered! A trio of good-looking young men called The Angelos, took Bacolod by storm recently when they held a concert at the Bacolod Pavillon and won the hearts of the Bacoleños. We had met them earlier during a dinner party at Dr. Ver Lacson’s place and we were immediately struck by their “boy-next-door” looks, their good manners and their talent.

During the party, we saw how wonderfully they performed when they sang, “You Raise Me Up”, which held the guests spellbound. They have been called the Filipinos’ answer to Il Divo and The Canadian Tenors. Their repertoire is most impressive as they give the classical songs a modern twist - you should hear them sing “Nessun Dorma” (simply breathtaking)!

The Angelos concert started a bit late due to a presentation of the Pilgrimage of Life, featuring pilgrimage shrines being promoted by the Diocese of Bacolod. There was a collective sigh of relief from the audience when the concert finally began. The trio composed of George Tagle, Paulo Libiran and Louie Abaigar, soon had the crowd enthralled with their rendition of songs made popular by famous tenor Andrea Bocelli, Josh Groban, etc. I liked the way George made his presence onstage. He OWNED the stage every time he sang. Paulo thrilled the audience with his falsetto voice, while handsome Louie was a singing dreamboat.

Soon they ignited the audience with a special ‘audience participation’ portion where they asked some members of the audience – yours truly included (ehem!), to the stage to sing the theme song from the movie “Ghost”. Now who in the world could remember the song “Unchained Melody”, for heaven’s sake! But it was all in good fun and the crowd lapped it up.

The solo violinist Merjon Lagaya was a stunning surprise. He wowed the audience with his inspired rendition of love songs from Broadway: “Some Enchanted Evening, Edelweiss,” etc.

The concert ended with a rousing modern number which had the crowd on its feet dancing!*
