Squabble over Iggy averted

Rolly Espina

The expected squabble between Grace Ibuna and Alicia “Aleli”, the wife of former Rep. Ignacio Arroyo (5th District, Neg. Occ.) fizzled out with the arrival of Iggy’s remains at the NAIA I from London.

Apparently both sides cooled down. Instead of her formerly bellicose insistence that she and Bianca, Iggy’s eldest daughter, will have the sole say over the burial arrangements for the deceased solon, Grace declared at the airport arrival that her only interest was to assure that Iggy gets a dignified burial and would have his last wish to be complied that his body be brought to Negros Occidental.

Alicia, Aleli, wisely, did not appear at the airport. That prevented a possible confrontation between the two women. From the airport, Iggy’s remains were immediately whisked to the Arroyo ancestral home in La Vista Subdivision of Quezon City reports said, adding that it will stay there until Saturday. It will be moved to the House of Representative Monday for the necrological services and for the honors due a member of the chamber and Congress.

At 4 p.m. Monday, Iggy’s remains will be flown to Bacolod. He will be transported by a caravan of friends and close relatives as well as sympathizers and constituents to Binalbagan, reports also said.

Board Member Melvin Ibañez said since the wake can not be held at the Binalbagan Catholic Church, instead, the body will be placed for viewing at the Mt. Carmel Building.

Welcome home, Iggy, May God give you the rest that you must have hungered for after the turmoil of your last days on earth after your death. God bless you.

A lot of speculations have been bruited around regarding the possible fate of Supreme Court Chief Justice Renato Corona. The prosecution has been most vocal in declaring that they have submitted to the Senate Impeachment court enough evidence to secure his conviction.

That, more or less, adheres to the viewpoint of President Benigno Aquino III who has been undertaking a parallel front on the Impeachment with his public denunciation of Corona.

Well, that could spell the difference, because impeachment is also a political process.

That is why, although billed as apolitical, the rally by the Iglesia Ni Cristo at the Luneta Grandstand, also serves as a warning to members of the Senate to tread the waters with trepidation. Especially those wishing to run for reelection.

The talk of the town was still the Senate’s declaration of private prosecutor Vitaliano Aguirre III for contempt when he was found to have covered his ears for the duration of Senator Miriam Santiago’s tirades against the prosecution panel.

Actually, it was Senator Jinggoy Estrada who accosted Aguirre about his actuation caught on TV, promptly, he stood up and told the Senate Impeachment court that he could not tolerate the shrill voice of Sen. Santiago. And also added that if you want to be respected you must learn to respect others.

That drew the collected ire of the court. Even of Senate President Juan Ponce Enrile, the mild-mannered and cool presiding officer.

Aguirre was hustled out of the session hall by prosecution members and of the Senate custodial force.

I, myself, have often been turned off by Miriam’s histrionics, but I must admit that her mastery of the law and her memorable quips often register with me as worth remembering.

And she certainly does not deserve to be insulted by the lawyer.

Sometimes, we get ourselves some rather comic incidents such as the report about the Bacolod truck driver found himself assaulted by a group of Ilongga commercial sex workers when he accosted one who had accepted his P200 fee for her work.

He must have gone home yesterday bloody and blue after the irate women assaulted him at the Iloilo Muelle de la Industria.

Then, we have the report that a young girl living on 13th Aguinaldo Street complained to the police that she saw an identified policeman from Sagay washing her undergarments.

The same policeman had originally been transferred to the NOPPO after his involvement in a controversy in Sagay City.

One of the girls accused the policeman of wearing her panties while washing their underwear.

I suppose he must have a fetish for women’s panties and underwear. But he has no business remaining as a policeman when he could subject the entire police force to ridicule. He should undergo a psychiatric examination.

Remember that report of a suspected bomb smuggled inside a package at the Kalibo Airport?

Well, it seems that after rigid inspection, that was reported by the police as a brake drum of a golf cart.

That had set off a flurry among airport police when spotted by the X-ray. Police even asked for a K-9 dog to help them examine the package which turned out to be just that – a brake drum of a golf cart.

Well, at least that’s one that turned out to be a dud.*
