Quake damages
‘Highway 2000’
BY JUANCHO GALLARDE

The “Highway 2000” project of the Negros Oriental provincial government incurred heavy damage from the recent earthquake that hit its First District.

Major cracks and landslides were noted along the stretch of the highway during an ocular inspection yesterday by Gov. Roel Degamo together with provincial engineer Franco Alpuerto and Victoriano Calderon.

About 150 meters of road in Sitio Bolocaue, Barangay Eli in Jimalalud were rendered impassable when a portion of the mountain collapsed.

Degamo directed the Provincial Engineer’s Office to clear the road of fallen rocks and mud. A P10 million fund is reportedly available to continue the road network.

However, with the landslides and cracks, Alpuerto said variations of the contract is possible, while a relocation survey is being conducted by a private contractor.

Highway 2000 is a road network from the mountain town of Mabinay that traverses the hinterland barangays of Ayungon, Tayasan, Jimalalud, La Libertad and up to the boundary of Guihulngan, that was started in mid-1994.*JG
