AFP checks report of NPAs
among victims of landslide
BY GILBERT BAYORAN

The military is  validating persistent reports   that New People’s Army rebels operating in the hinterlands of the southern portion of Guihulngan  were  among the victims of landslides from the recent magnitude 6.9 earthquake.

Col. Francisco Patrimonio, 302nd Infantry Brigade commander, yesterday said the details vary as to the number of NPAs that had been  allegedly buried  by the landslide in Brgy. Planas,   a known rebel lair in Guihulngan City.

Patrimonio claimed there is a “zero report on NPA sightings”, almost three weeks after the  landslide in the place where a platoon-sized NPA unit,  composed of about 20 to 30 men regularly operates.

IRR on plastics
ordinance signed

BY MARICAR ARANAS

Dumaguete City Mayor Manuel Sagarbarria has signed the Implementing Rules and Regulations for the implementation of the Plastics Ordinance that seeks to regulate the use of plastics and styrofoam in public markets, grocery stores and restaurants in the city.

The approval of the ordinance on August 10, 2011, is part of the effort of the city government to solve the ecological imbalance in the city’s waterways, drainage canals, rivers and creeks.

Sagarbarri said he supports the implementation of the ordinance because it will help reduce the volume of plastic that clog in drainage canals and contribute to heavy flooding, even during moderate rain.
