SP moves to protect seniors
BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

An ordinance creating a coordinating and monitoring board to provide special protection to senior citizens of Bacolod City against discrimination, abandonment, neglect and physical violence and imposing penalties for violation of the law, was approved by the Bacolod Sangguniang Panlungsod on first reading Wednesday.

Authored by Councilor Catalino Alisbo, the ordinance said that, to ensure that the rights of senior citizens of Bacolod are protected to the fullest, the city government will formulate laws against discrimination, abuse, abandonment, neglect and physical violence, to provide them sustainable programs against injustice.

It said R.A. 9994 or the Expanded Senior Citizens Act of 2010 states that assistance should be provided to senior citizens in filing complaint or charges against anyone who refuses to comply with their privileges.

The ordinance said the Bacolod City Coordinating and Monitoring Board will investigate the complaint filed against persons or establishments for alleged violation of R.A. 9994 in coordination with the Office of the Senior Citizens Affair.*CGS
