Drugs, bladed weapons and cellular phones, were seized during a greyhound operation conducted by the Region VI Bureau of Jail Management and Penology at the Handumanan Jail Annex in Bacolod City yesterday morning.
Senior Jail Officer 1 Leo Lacerna, of the Community Relations Officer of the BJMP-6, said they conducted the surprise inspection to ensure safety and security of the inmates and that jail guards are not remiss in their responsibilities.
During the inspection, four sachets of suspected shabu, several drug paraphernalia, and P17,000 in cash were recovered from two of the 364 inmates.
Lacerna said that last month, they found a visitor of a kidnapping suspect trying to bring in a .25 caliber pistol inside the jail but when he sensed that he would be caught, he left his things and left the place.
Last year, some shanties behind the jail were demolished and jail guards also confiscated cellphones and bladed weapons from the inmates.
Lacerna said they will check if the jail management is liable because the contrabands were slipped in during their watch.
Chief Insp. Amelito Fuentes, head of the Handumanan Jail Annex, did not reply to calls of the DAILY STAR, despite several attempts. *LTG back
