Update geohazard map
of Neg.Or., DOST told

Rep. Rodolfo Biazon (Muntinlupa City, Lone District), has ordered the Department of Science and Technology to draw up a comprehensive and new geohazard map of Negros Oriental.

The solon, who chairs the House Committee on National Defense and Security, presided over a meeting in Dumaguete with the Congressional Oversight Committee on Disaster Reduction following the series of calamities that struck major parts of Negros Oriental.

The simulation map should specify the dangerous areas for volcanic eruptions, earthquake, rockslide, landslide, flooding and tsunami in the province to guide the community, Biazon said.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau should also list down possible solutions to problematic and dangerous areas.

The scientific data will guide local government units on pre-emptive measures to be done, including the mitigating efforts to prevent any untoward incidents during calamities.

He also challenged LGUs to review and re-evaluate the infrastructure development plan, housing projects and other factors that could delay the flow of water during heavy rains.

It should be the priority of the LGU, considering the changing precipitation due to climate change, Biazon said.*
