The Social Security System, seeking to compel companies to fulfill their obligations to their workers, said the annual total of erring employers it sued last year surged by 66 percent last year to 1,227 from only 740 in 2010, an SSS press release said.
SSS President and Chief Executive Officer Emilio de Quiros, Jr. said nine out of every ten employers the agency charged in 2011 were for non-remittance of contributions amounting to P460.52 million, including penalties of over P217 million.
"SSS also collected more than P360 million in overdue contributions last year from delinquent employers through legal action. We will continue to step up our filing of cases this year to send a strong message to employers that they must obey the law," De Quiros said, in the press release.

better land use
Gov. Alfredo Marañon, Jr. and Housing and Land Use Regulatory Board chief executive officer, Antonio Bernardo, led in the signing of the commitment wall for the Comprehensive Land Use Plan Zero Backlog by 2013, during the project launching held at the Pavilion Hotel in Bacolod City, yesterday, a press release from the Capitol said.
The four-day activity is a cluster planning approach to CLUP preparation and updating, participated in by Sanggunian Panlalawigan Members and representatives of the cities and municipalities of Negros Occidental, in coordination with the provincial government.
Marañon said he hopes the planning process will be done seriously and implemented strictly in different LGUs, the press release said.

join trade confab
Negros Occidental is joining the regional convention of the 4H Club that provides livelihood projects for out-of-school youth its and teaches them to become young entrepreneurs, Maria Elena Gumban, its provincial coordinator, said yesterday.
Gumban said they a selection of participants the will represent the province in the regional convention on March 23 to 24 at Mambukal Resort in Murcia, will be hold tomorrow at the Social Hall at the Provincial Capitol Building in Bacolod City.
The youth will be introduced to organic agriculture and its impact on health, organic products, and lectures on basic entrepreneurship, she said.
