Iggy wake make tongues wag

Rolly Espina

What did Iggy have that two women are scrambling to claim his love and even his remains? This was the topic that had escaped the hundreds of 5th district constituents of former Iganacio Arroyo when they found themselves confronted by the sight of the two squabbling “wives” of Iggy at the St. Mary Magdalene Church in Hinigaran.

But Aleli, the wife of Iggy, may have committed a major error if she had thought that the fifth district still remembers her as the legitimate spouse of the former congressman.

As pointed out by somebody, she may have been de jure as the wife, but they overlook the fact that Grace Ibuna was considered by most as the de facto partner of the deceased solon.

But more important than the verbal tussle between the two is the fact that Iggy deserves to rest from a troubled life.

And while the self-righteous consider him as a sinner, they must remember that Christ came to earth to save sinners, not the saints.

So, let’s just forget the squabble and concentrate more on praying for Iggy’s soul and ask the Lord to grant him the rest he deserves.

For me, it’s time to direct our attention to more important things than the squabble of two women over Iggy.

Perhaps, the thing that should sort of jar is the announcement by the police that they are ready to file charges against 12 suspects in the P3.6 million robbery of the Central Negros Electric Cooperative last Friday.

Police still have to disclose the identities of the 12, although special operations task group had Santiago Rapiz named Reynaldo Bacolod, alias Toto, Jay Mira of Las Pinas City, and Joseph Calarmo and ten John Does”.

Now there was no word on whether the police could recover the loot, the largest ever gotten by robbers in Bacolod City.

That, of course, seems unlikely. Reports said police went to Iloilo the other day to verify whether the P960,00 in the hands of a person held by the Iloilo police looked like any of the 12 suspected robbers. But they returned empty-handed.

Anyway, we expected to see the police file the charges against the 12. And, I hope, we shall know their identities eventually.

The money, however, seems destined to have disappeared into thin air. Enough to fund the defense of the hold-uppers.

Another second lieutenant, Jose Angelo Esguerra, 26, was killed by an NPA snip on Brgy. Basak Tuyom of Cauayan town in Southern Negros Occidental.

Sayang. A promising young man at the prime of his life felled by a bullet. But the members of the 47IB Charlie Company platoon failed to avenge his death.

That’s the problem with the insurgency. Young people who can be an asset for development are snuffed out by just a single bullet.

We can only mourn his death. And hope that henceforth that should be last of the blood letting which does not contribute a bit to helping people rise from the poverty they have been suffering.

Residents of Brgy. Kapitan Ramon of Silay City are still wondering what happened to the pursuit operation against former Barangay Captain Noel Ayalin who massacred four officials and wounded three others on March 6, last year.

Certainly barangay residents are afraid of the possibility that Ayalin may return to exact vengeance on those who had ousted him from office after he had massacred his four victims.

Of course, the police reportedly said he is no longer in places they had him earlier in Murcia and Bago.

Brgy. Captain Ramon Célèbre, who survived the shooting rampage, has real cause for concern and called on the police to hasten the arrest of Ayalin.

Supt. Remus Canieso said police units outside of Negros Occidental had been furnished descriptions and photos of Ayalin.

Ayalin is armed and there is a shoot-to-kill order against him.

Well, we can only wait and hope that the police will eventually bag him. Before he kills others.

One wonders what is the reason behind the proliferation of stories about a coup. As far as I am concerned, I have not heard of any such talk.

At least, things like that just don’t remain hidden. Sooner or later, they surface one way to the other. And, so far, I have not heard any such talk.

So the question. Why does it seem to be the topic of the day? Something must be brewing. No, not about the coup. But something more sinister.*
