Customs misses
February collection goal

The Bureau of Customs missed its revenue goal in February due to low collection brought about by the annual celebration of the Chinese New Year.

BOC collected P20.97 billion in February this year, or P4.9 billion lower than the P25.67 billion goal for the month.

But Customs Commissioner Rufffy Biazon said the February collection exceeded its P18.62 billion collection during the same month last year.

He said that about 70 percent of the country’s imports came from China and the almost one month celebration of the Chinese New Year greatly affected the agency's collections.

The agency anticipated the low collection turn-out in the first two months of the year mainly because of the annual celebration, Biazon said.

“However, while we missed our February collection target this year, we were able to surpass the Bureau’s collection for the same period last year,” he said.

Biazon expects an improved revenue collection starting March due in part to the reorganization of its personnel, which hopes to maximize the efficiency and utilization of bureau's resources.

The bureau hopes to meet its P347 billion revenue goal for this year, P27 billion higher than its P320 billion target in 2011.*PNA
