AMONG 43 WORLDWIDE
Bacolod No. 6 in web vote
for wonder cities

BY CHRYSEE SAMILLANO

Bacolod City is one of the contenders in the selection of the New Seven Wonder Cities of the world.

Known as the City of Smiles, Bacolod got the sixth slot for Philippine urban cities grouped with Southeast Asia and Oceania cities as of March 12.

There are 303 cities vying for the top 77 which will be serially pruned down to 28, 21, 14 (finalists) and then to the final seven, via internet and text message voting.

Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia is urging Bacoleños to unite in achieving the vision of making the home of the MassKara Festival a premier city. Being Number Six in the list of 43 cities worldwide, he said, is itself already something to be proud about.

He also said that the people of Bacolod have good reason to hope for a good chance in the search, having been named by MoneySense Magazine as the “best city to live in” in the country in 2008, and later as the “most business-friendly city by the Philippines Chamber of Commerce and Industry, among other awards.

Leonardia said “Bacolod City is now well-positioned in tourism and call center operations, the reason why Vice Mayor Jude Thaddeus Sayson and I are working hard, together with the councilors and city and barangay officials, to give our city a more pleasant environment.”

“We have reinvigorated our clean and green movement, particularly our solid waste management program, and we also provided more patrol cars to our police personnel, because we want our tourists, visitors and investors to have a pleasant experience in the City of Smiles,” he said.

Leonardia said the redevelopment of the Shopping Area into the Bacolod’s “Chinatown Center” is another effort to boost the tourism and investment opportunities of the city.

New 7 Wonders is a positive, global campaign that brings people together for a common initiative and stimulates online empowerment to bring people into the global digital community by allowing for free voting anywhere in the world.

According to Bernard Weber, founder and president of New 7 Wonders, on its website http://news.n7w.com/2011/11/04/new7wonders-launches-new7wonders-cities/, “New7Wonders Cities will become a catalyst for discussing everything from urban planning to metropolitan governance, from tourism to architecture.”

Netcitizens may know more about Bacolod City in its official website www.bacolodcity.gov.ph.

Online users can vote the seven cities they want to be included in the next shortlist by going into http://www.new7wonders.com/cities/en, selecting Bacolod City and six other cities, and then following two other steps relating to character code confirmation and agreement to terms and conditions, the release said.

The New7Wonders Cities is the third campaign organized by N7W, following the man-made new wonders of the world and the new wonders of nature where the Puerto Princesa Underground River was already included.* CGS
