24 gold medals at stake in
2012 WVRAA Day 1

Sports competition in the 2012 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet starts today with 24 gold medals at stake in athletics, including those in the special games for physically-challenged athletes at the Panaad Park and Sports Stadium in Brgy. Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

Iloilo starts its title retention bid in secondary boys and girls’ and elementary boys’ athletics as 17 final events are lined up today including elementary and secondary boys and girls’ shot put, elementary and secondary boys and girls’ long jump, elementary and secondary boys and girls’ hurdles, elementary and secondary boys and girls’ 400-meter run, and 5,000-meter marathon.

In the special games, contingents from the participating provinces will vie for the gold, silver and bronze in 16 above boys and girls’ long jump for mentally challenged, 100-meter sprint for visually impaired boys and girls, 100m for mentally challenged 15 below boys and girls, and shot put for visually impaired and mentally challenged for boys and girls and 15 below.

The competing athletes in elementary boys shot put hope to better the 8.78m mark set last year in Iloilo by Jeremy Lance Halogong of Iloilo, Negrense Gerard Mark Layumas’ 6.53m record in secondary boys long jump, Edelyn Batiancila (Negros) 9.60m in elementary girls shot put, and Aklan’s Cyrene Joy Magbanua’s 5.21m mark in secondary girls long jump.

Last year’s gold medalist in secondary boys shot put was Ralf Efraim Gesulgon of Iloilo with 12.75m, Skjie Martir of Negros (5.34 meters) in elementary boys’ long jump; Michael Manaay of Negros (15.10 seconds) in secondary boys 110 hurdles; Renante Marfa of Iloilo (18.57 seconds) in elementary boys 110 hurdles; Catherine Costan of Negros (16.19 seconds) in secondary girls 110 hurdles and Rhea Castillano of Negros (16.41 seconds) in elementary girls 100 hurdles.

University of St. La Salle freshman and PRISAA gold medalist Maika De Oro holds the Palarong Pambansa records of 11.20 meters in shot put, while another Negrense athlete, Kimberly Natan, holds the regional record in elementary girls’ long jump with 4.66 meters.*NAB
