Tension cracks discovered in
28 sitios of Guihulngan

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

More tension cracks were discovered in 28 sitios in Guihulngan City, allegedly brought about by last month’s earthquake, Guihulngan Councilor Jessica Villarmente said.

In a meeting of the Association of Barangay Captains recently with Allen Cabaron, provincial coordinator of the Office of Civil Defense, the local officials said ground fractures were discovered in Sitio Pitogo in P. Zamora; Busay in Hilaitan; Bulay, Canhunda, and Candaislan in T. Hill; the area above the school in Humay-humay; sitios Binil-iwan, Mansulukon and Aluwihas in Calupaan; Mantuhod in Villegas; Lag-asan in Tacpao;

Sitios Alingatong, Kandail, Lulid and Butong in Kagawasan; Kandalaga and the village proper of Bulado; Bahay Panagsokong in Mabunga; Tuway, Bolonggon, and Bunyoron in P. Zamora; Kantupas and Panagsokong in Balogo; Butong in T. Beach; and sitios Tuko, Batongbuang, Upper Tapon, and Nabanwagan in Barangay Trinidad.

Barangay officials have been advised to warn residents to relocate to safer areas since these tension cracks may pose risks, considering that aftershocks are continuously being felt even a month after the 6.9-magnitude temblor.

Guihulngan residents felt another reverberation yesterday morning, sending them scampering to safety even as the PHIVOLCS had assured that the strength of these tremors has been reduced.

A joint survey by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration, and the OCD, had also been requested to identify risky areas in the city.

The assessment, initially scheduled end of this month, will be done after the Holy Week observance, Villarmente said.*JFP
