Although they did not come to Negros Occidental and Bacolod City, with purposes other than to participate and display their skills in the disciplines they are competing in, the 2,000 or so student athletes who have come for the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association meet, can very well serve as young promoters of tourism for this city and province.

The athletes, their coaches and school officials, and even the parents and families of some, are all potential endorsers of our city and province that, like their counterparts, and the national government, as well, are now banking heavily on tourism for their economic progress and development.

That is why, it should be incumbent upon every Bacoleño and Negrenses to contribute what they can to make the stay here of these visitors as pleasant and comfortable as possible. Let us help them find their way here, and assist them in their needs, as well as protect them as they go around, looking at what we have offer.

Let us see to it that the young athletes who are here, get warm welcomes from their counterparts, and that they are treated as what they really are – guests and visitors here.

We especially call on our transport sectors, our buses, jeepneys, taxis, and even our tricycle and trisikad operators and drivers to be courteous and respectful, and not only assist them, but also treat them with honesty and respect.

Bacolod City has adopted the slogan of being “The City of Smiles”. Let us show our guests that we take this to heart. A study once showed that it takes more than 40 muscles to frown, and only 16 to smile. So, let us show our new friends our smiles, because, for sure, we will also get smiles back.

Let us think of all this as we associate with the visitors that the WVRAA brings these days to our province and city.*
