Negros poised to capture
19th WVRAA overall title

With team titles from elementary girls’ taekwondo, elementary boys’ football, elementary boys’ basketball, elementary and secondary boys and girls’ table tennis, elementary and secondary girls’ and secondary boys’ badminton, host Negros Occidental is on its way of claiming its 19th straight overall championship in the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Meet at the Panaad Park and Sports Stadium in Brgy. Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

Young taekwondo jins Kathleen Dinsay, Arielle Legazpi, and Julienne Bermejo bagged the gold in elementary girls’ taekwondo, while the booters from San Carlos City prevailed over Iloilo in the championship match yesterday morning to win the elementary football title.

“These boys worked and trained hard and they’ve been playing since they were six years old under the football program of the city government of San Carlos,” John Carmona of the San Carlos City Football Club said.

Boys from San Carlos City are also representing Negros Occidental in the secondary football and were one goal down against Iloilo in the final match being played as of press time at the Panaad pitch.

Another gold medal for the province came from the quartet of Areanel Theofer Ariola, Niel John Lauren, John Michael Castro, and Dealbert Paulma, coached by Maricar Serviñas, that claimed the team championship in elementary boys’ table tennis, while Iloilo settled for silver and Antique, the bronze.

The feat was replicated by the elementary girls table tennis team mentored by Marlon Serviños and composed of Ann Gella Borbon, Edira Garganian, Mariella Mabaquiao, and Alyssa Toleco. The girls beat their counterparts from Iloilo in the battle for gold, while Capiz salvaged the

bronze medal.

Members of the champion secondary boys’ table tennis team are Rhomar Dasilao, John Paul Gubaton, Edmund Garganian and Marc Angelou Peñaranda, with Gorgonio Loloy coaching them, while the girls’ team is composed of Emy Rose Dael, Beverly Paulma, Rose Jean Fadol, and Shamiela Pineda with coach Dexter Delenila.

BOXING AND ATHLETICS

In boxing, Negros pugs bagged four out of seven gold medals with Jasper Amida winning in 34 kgs., Renz Orcada in 38 kgs., Mario Jaga, 40 kgs., and Aljun Oro, 48 kgs.

All four young fighters are products of the Negros First Boxing Program of the provincial government, spearheaded by Executive Assistant to the Governor Angel Verdeflor.

The host province also remained ahead in athletics with an additional 22 gold medals yesterday.

Sagaynon Cezar Fernandez booked his third gold medal in the meet as he ruled the elementary boys’ high jump after winning in long jump and triple jump, earlier.

Ceasar Ian Oberas, gold medalist in elementary boys’ 100m run topped yesterday’s 200m to claim his second gold, same with Erma Rose Gamao from Escalante, who reigned in both secondary girls’ 100m and 200-meter.

BASKETBALL AND SOFTBALL

After topping the elimination round and earning a twice-to-beat advantage, Negros Occidental secondary girls’ basketball team from University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos, dropped their first game in the finals yesterday against Iloilo, 59-62.

Trailing by as much as nine points in the third quarter, the UNO-Rians managed to catch up in the fourth quarter and tied the score at 57-all with 1:42 left in the game.

Iloilo, however, kept their composure, converted their free throws, and outplayed Negros Occidental in the final minutes to arrange a knockout game today.

In softball, perennial champion ETCS elementary girls bowed to Iloilo yesterday morning, 2-12, but beat Aklan in the afternoon to earn their ticket to the championship round against Iloilo once again.

In contrast, the Domingo Lacson National High School secondary girls’ softball team, blanked Iloilo, 9-0, for a twice-to-beat advantage in today’s final match.

SWIMMING

Negros Occidental’s swimmers continued their dominance yesterday as they ended their campaign yesterday with 22 more gold medals.

Among the swimming gold medalists for Negros Occidental were Jason Adrian Mirabueno, Jia Marie Torres, Lorenzo Xavier Abello, Christianne Andrea Jerez, Kaye Cantolino, Remselle Limaco, Alfred Valentin Rojo;

Kyla Isabelle Mabus, Julie Mary Occeño, Rosemary Occeño, Christian Jaboneta, Febbie Mae Porras, and Ellene Grace Dewara.

Among those who won a silver medal were: Alfred Marro Rojo, Riana Nicole Yanson, Luis Evangelista, Kim Karen Ambong, Jaxier Jereza, Febbie Mae Porras, Justin Trayco, and Nechelle Salgado.*NAB
