ON ACCIDENT
Onyok’s kin agree to settlement

BY ADRIAN NEMES III

The family of Silver Olympic medalist Mansueto “Onyok” Velasco and the owner of the truck who had hit his elder brother who was driving a motorcycle in Bacolod City Monday, reached an amicable settlement yesterday.

Senior Police Officer 1 Xavier Rama, who facilitated the meeting between the Velascos and the owner of the truck, said the boxer’s family will no longer file charges against driver Fernando Baltazar Jr., 34, of Brgy. Guinhalaran in Silay City so long as they comply with their requests.

Rama said among the requests of the Velascos is that the owner of the truck will shoulder the education of the 12-year-old son of the boxer’s elder brother Lauro, 48, and that they pay for his hospitalization.

He said Lauro Velasco sustained severe head injuries and is now comatose at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital, where he was brought after the accident.

Based on the investigation conducted by Police Officer 2 Eliseo Adraneda, Velasco was on his Yamaha motorcycle and was heading south of Gatuslao Street, while the truck was heading east of Burgos Street at about 11:15 p.m. Monday when the accident happened.

Baltazar had told the DAILY STAR that he immediately left the scene of the accident as he was afraid that the bystanders, who witnessed what happened, would maul him.

He also apologized to the Velasco family, saying that what happened was an accident, and that he has no intentions to avoid his responsibilities.*APN
