Negros retains WVRAA crown
BY NIDA BUENAFE

After five days of competition, Negros Occidental captured 13 team titles in elementary and 15 in secondary division to register its 19th overall championship in the 2012 Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association Meet at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Brgy. Mansilingan, Bacolod City.

Iloilo, however, spoiled the fun for the host team as it swept the championship in both elementary and secondary boys and girls’ athletics.

In elementary level, Negros booked the team titles in girls’ badminton, basketball, girls’ chess, football, softball, boys and girls’ swimming, boys and girls’ table tennis, girls’ taekwondo, tennis, and girls’ volleyball.moremoremore

Special polls set
June 2: Comelec
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Commission on Elections Chairman Sixto Brilliantes Jr. yesterday announced that the special elections for the new congressman of the fifth district of Negros Occidental will be held on June 2, COMELEC spokesman James Jimenez said yesterday.

Jimenez said Brilliantes made the announcement as the COMELEC en banc was expected to receive the proposed calendar activities for the special polls yesterday.

COMELEC deputy executive director for operations, Bartolome Sinocruz, who is in charge of special elections, has drawn up the proposed calendar of activities for the commission en banc to approve, Jimenez added.moremoremore

Iggy’s sis registers
in Binalbagan

BY CARLA GOMEZ

Ma. Lourdes Arroyo-Lesaca, sister of the late Rep. Ignacio Arroyo Jr.,  yesterday transferred her voter’s registration  from Quezon City to Binalbagan, Negros Occidental, and her lawyers said there is no legal impediment against her plan to run for congresswoman of the fifth district of the province  in special elections set in June.

Lesaca said she voted in  Payao, Binalbagan, in 2004 when her brother first ran for congressman of the fifth district, and she was merely returning to her original domicile. In the 2007 elections,  she voted in Iloilo and in 2010 in Quezon City,  when her husband ran for councilor, she said earlier.
