Valladolid gets P3.3M for
barangay projects

Checks worth P3.35-million were distributed by Negros Occidental Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr. in Valladolid town recently, to fund projects in the barangays, a press release from the Capitol said.

Of the amount, P2,000,000 will be used for the rehabilitation of the Alijis-Bayabas-Pacol farm-to-market road; P600,000 for streetlights in barangays Pacol, Paloma, Central Tabao, and Ayungon; and P150,000 each for the renovation of the health centers in Batuan and Bayabas, expansion and renovation of the barangay halls in Tabao Proper and Lacaron, and for the rehabilitation of the public plaza in Guintorilan.

Marañon, who handed the checks to the barangay captains, said he will send a team from the Capitol to assist and monitor the implementation of the projects, the press release said.*

Negrense receives award
on disaster risk reduction

A Negrense received the 1st Civil Military Operations Group Award in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation yesterday, at the founding anniversary rites of the CMOG of the Philippine Navy, in Fort Bonifacio in Taguig, a press release said.

Awardee Mark Cervantes has been working on community-managed disaster risk reduction as a volunteer, and conceptualized programs such as the “Safe School to Offset Vulnerabilities and Increase Empowerment of Children”, community emergency response team as a component of CMDRR; and developed the CIELO System on the disaster resilience of a community, the press release said.

The system includes transportation, health, early warning, communication and contingency plan, incident command/internal response, evacuation, livelihood resilience and organizational development, it also said.

Cervantes also trained local government units in Negros Oriental on CMDRR and held a DRR training in EB Magalona town in Negros Occidental, and in Bais City, Oriental Negros, the press release added.*

VMA holds graduation,
launching rites

The Visayan Maritime Academy Global College in Bacolod City will hold its 25th commencement and launching exercises today and Sunday, and has invited officials of the Professional Regulations Commission as guest speakers, a press release from the school said.

Lily Ann Rico-Baldago, director of PRC-Region 6, will be the keynote speaker of the recognition ceremonies today, together with Capt. Niño Elson Salabas and Jennyveb Eyan, alumni from batches 2001 and 2009, respectively, who will also deliver messages, the press release said.

PRC Commissioner Jennifer Jardin-Manalili, meanwhile, will be the commencement speaker in the graduation ceremonies tomorrow, with Capt. Shigeru Nemoto of IINO Lines, as the lead launching officer, the press release added.*

1st float contest highlights
16th Sinigayan Fest

The first float parade competition opened the 16th Sinigayan Festival from March 15 to 19, with 16 from the schools, business establishments and non-government organizations competing, and highlighting the theme “Food First”, a press release from Sagay City said.

The parade, led by Mayor Leo Rafael Cueva and Vice Mayor Kent Javelosa, presented floats showcasing Sagaynons artistry, craftsmanship, and richness of its natural resources, with replicas of sugarcanes, root crops, fruits and vegetables, livestock and poultry products adorning many of the floats.

Rep. Alfredo Marañon III (Neg. Occ., 2nd District), guest of honor and speaker in the opening program, said the festival used to be a traditional religious celebration but will now serve as an avenue for thanksgiving for the blessings, and for sparing Sagay City from disasters, the press release added.

The festival theme is also a call to action to make sustainable food production the first priority, and to keep its supply sufficient and guarded at all times, Marañon added.

Cueva led officials and guests in the opening of the agro-aqua festival village, Du-ag Sagay artists’ village, Tali-ambong food festival village and the exhibit on poultry, livestock and live animals, the press release added.*
