Special polls set
June 2: Comelec
BY CARLA GOMEZ

Commission on Elections Chairman Sixto Brilliantes Jr. yesterday announced that the special elections for the new congressman of the fifth district of Negros Occidental will be held on June 2, COMELEC spokesman James Jimenez said yesterday.

Jimenez said Brilliantes made the announcement as the COMELEC en banc was expected to receive the proposed calendar activities for the special polls yesterday.

COMELEC deputy executive director for operations, Bartolome Sinocruz, who is in charge of special elections, has drawn up the proposed calendar of activities for the commission en banc to approve, Jimenez added.

The calendar of activities will be released next week after the Commission en banc approves it, he said.

House Resolution 2171, adopted as HR 00248 Monday night, certified the existence of a vacancy in the House of Representatives, following the death of Rep. Ignacio Arroyo Jr. of the fifth congressional district of Negros Occidental, and called for a special election to fill his post, Rep. Alfredo Abelaro Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) said.

The approved resolution was transmitted to the COMELEC on Tuesday for it to set the date for the special election, Benitez said.

Gov. Alfredo Maranon Jr. yesterday said the United Negros Alliance will hold a meeting next week, especially with the mayors of the fifth district, to decide whom their party will field for the congressional race in June.

The governor said UNA will chose among Binalbagan Mayor Alejandro Mirasol, Board Member Melvin Ibañez, and whoever may be interested to run from the party.

Meanwhile, a source said Mirasol is the favored administration candidate for congressman, having been the first mayor of Negros Occidental to have openly supported the presidential bid of Benigno Aquino III.

Grace Ibuna, partner of Rep. Arroyo, is said to also be planning to support Mirasol’s congressional bid.

Also eyeing the fifth congressional seat are Rep. Arroyo’s sister, former Kasangga Rep. Ma Lourdes Arroyo Lesaca, Board Member Emilio Yulo III, and former Board Member Enrique Montilla.*CPG
