Tanjay dads to consult
public on helmet law

BY JUDY F. PARTLOW

Officials of Tanjay City, Negros Oriental, will gather reactions and proposals from concerned sectors on the implementation of the mandatory helmet law on August 1.

Councilor Uldarico Mariano Ramirez III said the city government has yet to get the public pulse on the law that has become an issue between those for or against it.

Public sentiment in Tanjay tends towards the impracticality of wearing helmets around the city streets, he said, adding that many are raising questions over the “inconvenience” of having to put on their helmets on short drives, such as ferrying their children to school or going to the market.

Ramirez said the Tanjay City Council hopes to invite Janine Lawas, chief of the Land Transportation Office-Bais District, to shed light on Republic Act 10054 or the mandatory helmet law, to its session Wednesday.

He said the council will have to weigh things first before deciding on its next move, such as the possibility of replicating the actions taken in Dumaguete by some councilors to protest the mandatory helmet law, through the filing of a petition for declaratory relief, and the approval of a resolution addressed to Senator Ramon Revilla Jr., to review and perhaps amend the law.*JFP
