Baciwa holds
photo contest

The Bacolod City Water District announced yesterday that the deadline for submission of photo-entries to its “World Water Day 2012” exhibit contest is 5 p.m. tomorrow.

The original 5R photo must be submitted, based on the year's World Water Day celebration theme "Water and Food Security", Joy Castillon, of Baciwa, said in the press release.

The entries will be judged according to photo composition, 35 percent; originality, 35 percent; technical quality, 15 percent; and artistic merit, 15 percent.

The contest is open to amateur photographers. Entries must have corresponding titles or captions, and taken within Negros Island only. All submitted entries will be exhibited at the Baciwa administrative building for judging, and will automatically belong to the water district, the press release added.

The awarding ceremonies will be held at Robinsons Place Bacolod, 6 p.m. on March 22. The first prize winner will get P4,000; 2nd placer, P3,000; and 3rd placer, P2,000, the press release sad.*

Women’s rights gab set

About 150 participants from government and civil society groups will convene in Bacolod City March 22 for a provincial forum on women’s rights in armed conflict situations to be held 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the Montelibano Hall of the Negros Occidental Barangay Center Sweet City Captel, a press release from the Dawn Foundation said.

The forum was organized by PILIPINA, a national women’s organization chaired by Philippine Daily Inquirer columnist Rina Jimenez-David.

It is a part of a project to popularize the Magna Carta of Women or Republic Act 9710, and the National Action Plan on the United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1325/1820 on Women, Peace and Security, Silay City Councilor Marie June Pavillar-Castro, chair of the PILIPINA Bacolod Chapter, said in the press release.

Celia Flor, PILIPINA national council member, will present the result of the initial study on “Responding to Women Survivors of Armed Conflict” done last year in barangays Cambayoso, Malatas and Terim, Calatrava, Negros Occidental; Brgy. Tayzan, Legazpi City; and Brgy. Pasian Monkayo, Maguindanao, the press release said.

Andrea Lizares-Si, DAWN president and a PILIPINA member, will present the women, peace and security provisions of the MCW and the NAP to implement UNSCRs 1325 and 1820, it added.*

Ilog fiesta starts March 23

Ilog town in Negros Occidental will hold its annual fiesta March 23 to 25, with activities that will start with the awarding of its outstanding taxpayers in the opening program Friday, a press release from the town said.

A cultural show and pop dance competition, to be led by the Department of Education and Jaycees, will be held on the first day; while March 24 activities will focus on sports like the fun run, boxing, basketball and volleyball.

A concelebrated mass to be officiated by Rev. Patricio Buzon, Diocese of Kabankalan bishop will start the activities on last day of the fiesta, and an Iglesia Filipina Independiente bishop, the press release added.

There will also be a Biray Sinulog reenactment, the blessing of the Ilog municipal covered court, and a “Kisi-Kisi” showdown. The champion will receive P25,000; 1st runner-up, P20,000; 2nd runner-up, P15,000, and four consolation prizes of P3,000 each group. Groups declared as best in choreography and headdress will also get P3,000 each, the press release added.*

Red Cross elects officers

Seventy-nine youth delegates and observers, and 16 council advisers from 20 schools in Negros Occidental, attended the local Red Cross Youth 10th assembly, with the theme “RCY, our T.I.M.E: Trained, Intensified, Motivated, Empowered”, recently, a press release from the organization said.

Activities included plenary and break-out sessions, discussions on volunteer mobilization and networking, project implementation of RCY programs, issues concerning the youth and the RCY volunteers, and amendments to the Council’s constitution and by-laws, it added.

The 2012-2014 officers of the Youth Council and the Youth Advisers’ League who were elected during the assembly were Jemuel Alabado from USLS-College, president; John Paul Martinez of Riverside College, vice president; April Dyan Roug Chavez, Notre Dame of Talisay, secretary; Kris Dawn Rivera, PNU-Cadiz, assistant secretary; Caren May Nagum, Notre Dame of Talisay, treasurer; Zyre Fernandez, JBLCF, asst. treasurer; Shanneil Togle, Riverside College, auditor; Edilberto Golez III, USLS-IS, public relations officer; and Samuel De la Paz, Sum-ag National High School, asst. PRO.

The new League officials are Wenceslao Narazo, RTNHS, president; May Olorga, TUP-V, vice president; Pacita Caroline Tan, USLS-College, secretary; Delilah Navarro, Riverside College, asst. secretary; Dr. Ephraim Estacion Jr., PNU-Cadiz, treasurer; Mely Alabanzas, WNU-IS, asst. treasurer; David Bob Carillo, Bata National High School, auditor; Carlos Diaz, USLS-IS, PRO; and Marizette Lao, Trinity Christian School, asst. PRO, the press release added.*
