The provincial government needs P12 million to renovate the Provincial Agriculture Office building, that is too old to withstand high magnitude quakes, based on the assessments of the Bureau of Fire Protection and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology.
Provincial agriculturist Greg Paltinca also pointed out the need to immediately upgrade the building’s wiring installations. He said the building was built in the 1930s.
He also said Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo is looking for funds to start the renovation this year. Degamo has directed the Provincial Engineer’s Office to identify old structures that are considered fire hazards, and those that need to be preserved or dismantled.
Data showed that aside from PAO, the buildings of the Social Welfare and Development, National Bureau of Investigation, Philippine Drug Enforcement Administration, Environment and Natural Resources Division, as well as the office occupied by the Department of Interior and Local Government, are among the old buildings in the province.*JG
