Ban on trekking in
Kanlaon lifted

The Office of the Park Superintendent of the Mt. Kanla-on Natural Park has now lifted the temporary ban on mountaineering activities in the area following cracks monitored after the 6.9 magnitude earthquake, on February 6, 2012, a Philippine Information Agency press release said

After aerial and ground assessments, Park Superintendent Cecil Cañada recommended that the ban on the trekking at MKNP be lifted.

The assessment, found out that the mountaineering trails in the park are all passable and do not pose danger to trekkers. Water sources at the camp sites were also undisturbed, and rock perimeter line were established at the rim of the volcano crater, the press release said.

“In general, there is no problem with water at the usual water source at and along the campsites. However, during summer, water may deplete due to the natural cycle of evaporation and not because of the earthquake,” Angelo Bibar, MKNP Ecotourism and Protected Area Management Board Operations Officer, said.

A 5-climber to 1 guide ration will be adopted after the lifting of the ban to ensure the safety of park visitors, making it easier for the accredited guides to supervise the trek.

The lifting of ban was at the level of the Office of the Park Superintendent duly noted by the Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Valentin Talabero, the press release added.*PIA
