Negros chess program gets a boost,
Severino, Abanco join Bangkok tilt

Sending young Fide Master Sander Severino and local champion POI Ernie Abanco to the Bangkok Invitational Chess Open set April 13-19 is the start of giving international exposure to chess players from Negros Occidental, chess patron Tony Aguirre said yesterday.

In a press conference, Aguirre said Negrense players have the talent but they lack the needed exposure in the international arena.

Severino and Abanco’s participation in the Bangkok tournament, he said, is just a start as he is eyeing more international competitions for them, probably in Europe and in the US in the coming years.

Sipalay City to host
age-group triathlon

The Sipalay City, in coordination with the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental, will host the National Age-Group Triathlon Saturday in Sipalay City, a press release from the Capitol said.

Spearheaded by Mayor Oscar Montilla Jr., the event is supported by  Gov. Alfredo Marañon Jr., Department of Tourism-Region 6, Triathlon Association of the Island of Negros and the Triathlon Association of the Philippines.

The race will showcase Sipalay’s scenic coastal areas as triathletes joining the Olympic category will swim 1.5 kilometers on pristine waters, bike for 40 kilometers on flat road, and run for 10 kilometers by the beach, the press release said.
