RPA negotiating
for gun retention

BY GILBERT BAYORAN

BRGY. BAGONBON, San Carlos City - The Revolutionary Proletarian Army-Alex Boncayao Brigade (Tabara Paduano Group) leadership will negotiate with the government for the retention of their firearms, citing security threats to their leaders and members from the New People’s Army, its spokesman, Victorino Sumulong, said.

Records of the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace Process show that the RPA-ABB forces in Negros island have about 538 firearms, aside from the 102 guns of their colleagues in Iloilo, Antique and Aklan.

The inventory of all firearms possessed by the rebel group form part of the imminent closure of the peace agreement between the government and the RPA-ABB (Tabara-Paduano Group).*moremoremore

Rojas favors
agro-eco sugar zones

BY CARLA GOMEZ

The creation of integrated agro-industrial economic zones for sugarcane will benefit the industry because it will result in economy of scale and make sugar production more cost efficient, Enrique Rojas, president of the National Federation of Sugarcane Planters, said yesterday.

“Sugarcane is a plantation crop…it calls for the consolidation of farms into more viable sizes,” Rojas said.

Rep. Alfredo Abelardo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) Wednesday said he is filing a bill that aims to raise the value of sugarcane through the creation of integrated agro industrial economic zones that will not only produce sugar, but fuel, power and other by-products, to enable the industry to survive trade liberalization beyond 2015.moremoremore
