‘‘Earth Hour 60+’ must
be a way of life”

A seminar on electricity conservation in households and schools, held recently in Iloilo, stressed that the “Earth Hour 60 +” should not be viewed as a one-shot-deal but as a way of life that takes into account the need to preserve the environment and conserve.

Denise Danielle Galvez, World Wildlife Fund for Nature project officer for climate change and energy program, was the speaker, a government press release said.

Galvez said excessive use of fossil fuel like gasoline and coal, use of toxic gases, and the clearing of forests, have contributed to a greenhouse effect or the heating of the world that contributes to climate change, the press release said.

Climate change results in extreme weather conditions, sea level rise, salt water intrusion, coral bleaching and decline in agricultural production, that will eventually cause hunger, the press release added.

With the theme “I will if you will,” more than 135 countries, joined by 98 million people across the globe, will voluntarily switch off their nonessential lights for one hour on March 31, from 8:30 to 9:30 p.m., it also said.

This year’s celebration will focus on what one can do beyond the 60 minutes ceremonial switching off of light, the press release added.*
