SJI 10-Under booters
keep NOPSSCEA title

St. John’s Institute blanked University of St. La Salle-Integrated School, 2-0, to successfully defend its 10-Under NOPSSCEA football title at the UNO-R football pitch.

A scoreless first half defined the highly-defensive final match, as both teams struggled to find an opportunity to score.

The second half opened with USLS-IS attacking the SJI side and breaking through its defense, but an attempt from one La Sallian player was effectively saved by SJI keeper Nathalie Glaraga.

Pressured to score its first goal, SJI responded by controlling the game with the trio of midfielders Gino Lopez, Bethany Talbot and Ali Arricivita spearheading their offense.

The hard working Lopez played a crucial role in thwarting several attacks from the USLS side, while skillful work of Talbot caused many problems for the La Sallians.

Excellent combination play from the trio opened up the USLS defense and allowed Michael Jan Baloyo to score as he worked his way across the penalty box to calmly sidefoot the ball into the net.

SJI did not let up as they continued to press forward leading to Paolo Go cashing on the second goal inside the penalty box for SJI on an assist from Talbot.

Coach Peter Talbot commended the team effort from the players and cited their parents for supporting their children in the tournament.*NAB
