The Province of Negros Occidental is giving out 14 major awards for the Panaad Pasidungog sa Panguma, Pangisda, kag Pagsagod Kasapatan 2012 in April with 23 local government units nominated, Dina Genzola, senior agriculturist and program chair, said yesterday.

The LGUs will vie for the title of Outstanding LGU, Outstanding Rice Farmer, Outstanding Corn Farmer, Outstanding Young Farmer, Outstanding Organic Farmer Association, Outstanding Agricultural Extension Worker, Outstanding Home Maker, and Outstanding Vegetable Farmer awards.

Outstanding citations will also be given for Fisherman, Outstanding Tilapya Farmer, Outstanding Bangus Farmer, Outstanding Marine Fishery, Outstanding FARMC, and Outstanding Bantay Dagat Task Force.

Genzola said the award is given to LGUs, individual farmers, and organizations to encourage them to continue producing staple food supply for the province and to achieve sufficiency.

She also said it will measure the contribution of every LGU, AEW, farmer, and association as stakeholders in the attainment of staple sufficiency goal of the province.

Sen. Francis Pangilinan, Department of Agriculture Assistant Sec. Dante Delima, and Agricultural Training Institute Dir. Asterio Saliot have been invited to the Farmers and Fisherfolks Congress in April, Genzola said.

She also said that there will be a Food Security Corner for every LGU booth highlighting their Negros First priority program. She added that a representative must be at the booth all the time to answer questions and present their display to their visitors.

Genzola added that putting up the booth will help LGUs market their products and local entrepreneurs to visitors from other cities and provinces during the festival.

Meanwhile, the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist has started the evaluation of the nominated LGUs for all the categories.

The nominees are the cities of Sagay, Sipalay, Bago, San Carlos, Silay, La Carlota, Talisay, Kabankalan, and Victorias and the towns of Hinobaan, Candoni, Binalbagan, Moises Padilla, Valladolid, Pulupandan, Hinigaran, San Enrique, Himamaylan, La Castellana, Pontevedra, Manapla, Murcia, and Cauayan. *LTG
