La Castellana paddlers capture title
in Andrew Jalandoni table tennis tilt

While other sports disciplines continue to strengthen their local programs, table tennis is also working its way to gain more public awareness in the province.

The previous weekend, the Royal Paddle Table Tennis Club headed by Arnie Uy held the Andrew Jalandoni Cup at the club’s center.

Paddlers from La Castellana town composed of Anthony Berja, Joel Paran and Remy Zerrudo captured the title and the cash prize of P2,000, while La Carlota City’s “Green Lantern” bannered by Roberto 'Francis' Jalandoon, Anthony Katada and Elmer Cortes finished first runner-up and went home with P1,500 cash prize.

The tournament had a tightly-contested semi-final round between the “Green Lantern” and the host-team Royal Paddle-B.

Royal Paddle’s Ferdinand Jong won against Green Lantern’s Katada in their singles’ match but the team of Jalandoon and Cortes made a rally from a 6-10 deficit in the deciding game to turn back Royal Paddle’s tandem of Ronnie Galzote and Steven Gonzaga.

In the third and deciding match, veteran Jalandoon made short work on the younger Gonzaga in a convincing 3-0 score en route to the finals.

The Royal Paddle Table Tennis Club will be the venue of the annual Milo Summer Clinic set on April 20-29, 2012.

The program intends to help in molding a new breed of local paddlers from the grassroots level.*NAB
