Fisherfolk optimistic
on seashells plan

Fisherfolk of Barangay Tuburan in E. B. Magalona can look forward to bountiful opportunities this year with the recent launching of the Green Mussel and Oyster Culture Project in their community, a press release from Rep. Alfredo Benitez (Neg. Occ., 3rd District) office said yesterday.

Fifty-three members of the Tuburan Fisherfolks and Mangrove Development Association received a grant of P 248,200 from the Department of Labor and Employment Integrated Livelihood Program to start them off with the communal green mussel and oyster culture project.

The press release also said that Benitez worked with DOLE, the E.B. Magalona municipal government through Mayor David Lacson, and Barangay Tuburan through their Punong Barangay Ramonito Espacio, Jr. to facilitate the coordination and finally implement the project designed to provide livelihood opportunities to informal sectors of communities.

The turnover ceremony in Barangay Tuburan on March 22 was attended by Roberto Abling, Chief Political Affairs Officer of the Office of Benitez with his Congressional and Districts office staff.

Fred Santizo, Labor Employment Officer III; Private Secretary to Mayor Lacson Allan Villaruz; Jessilyn Plaza, PESO Manager of E.B. Magalona; Tuburan Punong Barangay Ramonito Espacio and barangay officials; and Felix Salem, Association president and his members, attended the event, the press release said.

The project will be located in the 3,000 sq. m. water of the barangay. The DOLE grant will cover materials needed for the project.

The green mussel culture will be for six months, followed by a cycle of talaba culture.

The PESO of E.B. Magalona will closely monitor project implementation, while the office of Benitez will provide support by way of access to Food-for- Work activities for the association members, the press release added.*
